Methods for Making Ethyl Ethanoate. Industrial method
Ethyl ethanoate is made by esterification. A mixture of sulfuric acid, acetic acid and ethanol
are heated and poured into an esterifying column. The mixture that evaporates first goes
into a second column. 85% of ethyl acetate is separated. After distillation occurs, water is
added. There are now two layers. The top layer is poured into a refluxing column. The
residue left, is then distilled and removed of any impurities.

Methods for Making Ethyl Ethanoate. Laboratory method
Ethyl ethanoate is formed by pouring a mixture of concentrated sulfuric acid, ethanoic acid
and ethanol into a round-bottomed flask and then placing that flask on top of an electric
heater or water bath. Distillation takes place. Condensation then occurs and the ester is
collected in another beaker in droplets. Ester is evaporated first because it is volatile
